Intergalactic Brewing’s Captain and Commander Alex Van Horne was proud of the fact that when they opened two years ago they were the smallest brewery in San Diego.
“There was a brewery making less beer than us, but they closed a couple of years ago. We’ve held the San Diego tiny crown for 20 months now.” said Alex with obvious glee.”
But that was in the summer of 2013, and……….not much has changed. Intergalactic is still one of the smallest breweries in San Diego and IMHO they still make some of the best beers this side of Uranus.
The beer names reflect a love of Star Trek and Star Wars with names like ‘Astro’, ‘Subspace Session’, ‘Andromeda IPA,’ and the award-winning ‘Red Planet’ Rye.
Production is up a bit from the two barrels or 60 gallons a week they used to make. Local bars want their beers – desperately. To put that in perspective Alex’s neighbor Ballast Point produces 500 times that amount over the same seven days. With limited output the number of beers available in the cozy and spartan tasting room fluctuates between 10 and 16. But the brewery tries hard to have 12 taps on at all times. The beers sell fast to initiates, and curious newbies who have ‘heard the word’.
Alex’s first competition entry, his Red Planet Rye, a heady brew at 8.2% ABV won a Gold Medal at the San Diego International Beer Festival. It sold out almost instantly but will re-appear sporadically. This spring Intergalactic took home nine medals from the LA International Beer Competition and picked up another one at the San Diego International Beer Festival.
